Affirming Messages: Why MCCC Welcomes Everyone
Inclusive Theology
At Mill Creek Community Church, we believe in full participation of LGBTQ+ people in the life of the church. We do this because of our understanding of the Bible, that the love of Christ is inclusive, that God's mercy is expansive, that in God's Kingdom there is no male or female, straight or gay, but that we are all one in Christ Jesus. The sermons below articulate our theology of inclusion.
Love That Dares
This message is based on John 13:34-35 and Ephesians 3:17-19, preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church in June 2022. It lays the foundation for the centrality of love as the primary expression of our faith, a love that expands to include everyone. This message talks about the church being a place where everyone, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, is equally valued, has an equal opportunity to serve, and has equal expectations of what discipleship looks like in their lives.
Sword Handling for Lovers
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on June 25, 2023. Is the Bible a club designed to beat people into submission, a weapon to cut down those who doubt and struggle? Hebrews 4:12 calls the Bible the sword of the Spirit, but is that an excuse to stab people to death with the Word of God? 1 Corinthians 13:1 teaches that even if we speak angelically but without love, we are like clanging cymbals. This message shows how to interpret the “clobber passages" in ways consistent with Christlike love. We don’t need to throw out the Bible to love LGBTQ+ people, but we do need to understand it properly.
Guarding Dignity
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on June 22, 2025 as part of our annual Pride weekend event. As Christians we believe that every person is made in God’s image. Jesus modeled a welcoming love and taught that love is the defining characteristic of those who are his disciples. How can the church today be the hands, feet and mouthpiece of Jesus if we marginalize and villainize groups of people? Tangible love stands up for those unseen, speaks up for those denied a seat at the tables of power, and reaches out to those shoved to the margins. This the gospel, the core of what it means to follow Jesus.
What Stands in the Way?
This sermon was preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on September 11, 2022, part of the Acts of Inclusion Sermon Series. Philip meets an important official, a eunuch from Ethiopia. This eunuch was a sexual and racial minority, forbidden from even entering the temple in Jerusalem. Though the eunuch was excluded in every way from the old covenant, he asks, “What can stand in the way of my being baptized?” This man is included in Christ and is baptized into the family of believers. We are called to that same inclusive love.
Entering the House of Ill Repute
Preached at Mill Creek Community Church by Pastor Rob Jansons on September 18, 2022, this message is based on Acts 11:1-18, part of the Acts of Inclusion sermon series. Acts 10 tells the story of Peter having a vision and a call from God to meet Cornelius, a Roman Centurion, in his home. While there, Peter changes his understanding of who is included in the Kingdom of God in light of Jesus’ love and the expanding work of the Holy Spirit. The church in the 21st Century must as well!
Don't Make This Difficult
Preached at Mill Creek Community Church on September 25, 2022 by Pastor Rob Jansons, this is part of the Acts of Inclusion sermon series. What are the boundaries of grace? What must people do in order to be saved, to belong in the Christian church? Peter explains that grace does not discriminate, that our focus needs to be on the heart, on the evidence of God’s work and approval of those who might be different. The mandate of Christians today: let’s not make it difficult for people to follow Jesus! Churches must eliminate barriers so others can join us in following Jesus.
Redefining Neighbor
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on October 2, 2022, this message is based on the parable of the Good Samaritan. While some try to limit love, Jesus expands our view of love. We are to love those different from us. As Christians we must view all people, especially those in need, as children of God. In telling this parable, Jesus also redefines our relationship with Old Testament laws, teaching that the law of love supersedes any commandments or regulations made to Israel as part of the old covenant.
Welcome to The Party!
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on June 9, 2024. As a tax collector for the Roman Empire, Matthew was considered the worst kind of sinner. And yet Jesus calls him and celebrates Matthew’s acceptance of that call with a dinner party. If we model our lives after Jesus, then we too should be accepting of the unacceptable, welcoming to the rejected, loving to those hated by others. This is the call of the church to invite everyone to the ongoing party centered on Jesus.
Following the Scandal
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on September 8, 2024 as part of the "Following the Scandal" sermon series. No one wants another scandal in the church. And yet, in 1 Corinthians 1:23, Paul refers to Jesus as The Scandal, the one who makes people stumble. What is so scandalous about Jesus? Why were most of the guardians of religion appalled by Jesus? How is following Jesus, the one called Scandal, a journey into what some see as scandalous behavior, and where might it lead?
The Great Divide
Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on September 15, 2024 as part of the "Following the Scandal" sermon series. The response to Jesus’ ministry was polarizing. While the crowd is amazed at the love, compassion, and power of Jesus to heal, the religious leaders label Jesus as evil. Jesus warned his disciples as he sends them out into the world that not everyone will welcome his message of love and acceptance. These truths remain to this day.

Preached by Pastor Rob Jansons at Mill Creek Community Church on September 22, 2024 as part of the "Following the Scandal" sermon series. Pharisees took hand washing to the extreme and created elaborate rituals for purification prior to eating. Jesus’ disciples did not follow such religious rules and offended the religious leaders. How can we resist the tendency to take our religion and twist it into hypocritical legalism?
